California's Governor States He Is Weighing a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has disclosed that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," the governor stated when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."
Newsom's tenure as governor ends in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he cautioned that any decision is not imminent.
"Fate will determine that," he added.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
The California governor has stepped forward as a prominent adversary of the former president's team, using his digital presence and championing a ballot measure that would expand the party's House seats in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from critics.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed intentions to withhold government money from the state and threatened suspending the authority to provide CDLs.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," Duffy stated, after a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in fatalities and injured individuals.
His administration pointed out that the federal government had reauthorized the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously indicated he was blocking additional funds from the state for ignoring English language requirements for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Administration
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team retorted in a recent statement countering the funding warnings. "For now, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. The state of Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A this month's poll revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and a significant portion of the electorate indicated that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, his approval ratings has grown to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of more than 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, the governor stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.
"The idea that a guy who got 960 on his SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, amazing," he commented. "It's anyone's guess? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
