Forecasters have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue In Spite of Forecasts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are planned to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Frosty Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and good visibility. Readings are expected to be chilly, making additional clothing a necessity, said forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

As we enter Friday, snow alerts are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.

Temperatures Expected to Fall Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the highest roads and hills.

Public Health Alerts Released

In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings expected to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials explained this signified the weather could to trigger major effects across health and social care services. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.

The advice for all is clear: to welcome the new year in security, wrapping up warm is utterly key.
