The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several personalities within her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the protagonist navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core mechanic revolves around controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
