The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Track

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

All in all, the intro looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The series' intro doesn't quite capture the excitement and energy that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I still saved it on my phone. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening appears as one of them.

This animated adventure will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and YouTube.
