The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Trust' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old creates Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica
This talent is the latest to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in January.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Xabi Alonso invited the youngster to train with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.
However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," said the player following his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the best competition."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his youth and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent stamina, effort and movement."
Pitarch's mentality has also stood out to his coach.
"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he remains unfazed.
"I realize people are astonished to watch him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.
"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent both nations at senior international level.
Under international regulations, players may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to any full national side, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision soon."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the club pursue future success.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to overanalyze it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Manchester.
